2023 ISLAND GAMES
JERSEY SPORT TEAM

The NatWest International Island Games XIX will be held in Guernsey, from 8-14 July 2023.

We have some very talented athletes at Jersey Sport and 12 team members will be representing Jersey in the Island Games this year.

We spoke to our team to find out what sports they’re taking part in, if they think they’ll bring home a medal and more! Find out what they had to say below.

Catriona McAllister, CEO of Jersey Sport

What are you most looking forward too at this year’s Island Games? 
I am looking forward to visiting all the different sports and cheering loudly for Team Jersey. I know many of our athletes well and really want them to do well.

Is this your first Island Games? 
This is my third year of attending the games!

How proud are you to see Team Jersey Sport participating and representing Jersey? 
I am delighted to see so many Jersey Sport Staff involved in this years games and it’s so pleasing to see across many different sports. I am proud of them all.

What sport apart from your own, are you most looking forward to watching? 
I am looking forward to watching all sports but particularly the cycling, swimming and football.

Is there is a sport you would like to try?
I have actually tried all the sports except sailing, so I must rectify that!

Which sport/team are you representing and what is your role? 
Jersey Athlete and Sailing Team Manager, Category: ILCA 7

What are you most looking forward too at this year’s Island Games? 
With no previous experience I’m hugely excited by the opportunity to compete again at an international competition, to feel the buzz of a large event, and to be part of the team representing Jersey.

Is this your first Island Games? 
This is my first Island Games!

What sport apart from your own, are you most looking forward to watching?
There are too many brilliant options, I’m most looking forward to watching as many sports as possible and soaking up a vibrant Island Games atmosphere around the whole island – but if I had to pick a top one it would be triathlon, I enjoy watching the different elements all in the one race.

Which sport/team are you representing and what is your role? 
Jersey Men’s Football Team Manager.

Is this your first Island Games? 
This is my first Island Games.

What do you think your medal chances are like at this year’s Games? 
I think we’ve got a great chance of winning a medal, if we can get out of a tough group!

What sport apart from your own, are you most looking forward to watching? 
I’m looking forward to watching all of the sports but in particular the golf who we are sharing the hotel with!

Dan Garton, Children's Community Programmes Officer

Which sport/team are you representing and what is your role? 
Jersey Men’s Football Assistant Manager.

Is this your first Island Games?
This is my First Senior Island Games! I previously went to the Junior Island Games, but not the Seniors.

What do you think your medal chances are like at this year’s Games? 
I think we have a good chance to bring a medal home, the team have worked hard in the training sessions so far. We have some really talented players In the squad, if we apply ourselves correctly and gain momentum throughout the tournament we stand a good chance.

What sport apart from your own, are you most looking forward to watching? 
I’m interested in watching the racket sports such as Tennis, Badminton and Table Tennis. Although I’m also keen to support the other Jersey teams throughout.

Libby Barnett, Sports Development Manager

Which sport/team are you representing and what is your role? 
Jersey Women’s Football Athlete and Team Captain.

Is this your first Island Games? 
No, this is my sixth event! I have competed in Aland (2009), Isle of Wight (2011), Jersey (2015), Gotland (2017), and Ynes Mon (2019).

What do you think your medal chances are like at this year’s Games? 
We have medalled the last few games so the pressure is on to bring home the Gold!

What sport apart from your own, are you most looking forward to watching? 
We always try to visit other sports and support as much as possible when we aren’t competing ourselves, so will aim to do the same whenever we see a Jersey athlete or team on the schedule!

Harry Curtis, Holiday Programme Community Coach

Which sport/team are you representing and what is your role? 
Jersey Men’s Football Athlete.

Is this your first Island Games? 
This is my second Island Games, my first was in 2017 in Gotland.

What do you think your medal chances are like at this year’s Games? 
Our last couple attempts haven’t been good enough and this year we need to go for Gold!

What sport apart from your own, are you most looking forward to watching? 
I’m looking forward to watching the Bowls, it will have a great atmosphere!

Sam Lee, Swimming Coach / Schools PE Coach

Which sport/team are you representing and what is your role? 
Jersey Triathlon Athlete.

Is this your first Island Games? 
This will be my second Island Games, I competed in Jersey 2015.

What do you think your medal chances are like at this year’s Games? 
I want to go to the Island Games to do my best and make Jersey proud!

What sport apart from your own, are you most looking forward to watching? 
I am looking forward to all the sports, the atmosphere is always amazing!

Sian Silvester, Swimming Coach

Which sport/team are you representing and what is your role? 
Jersey Swimming Team – Head Coach.

Is this your first Island Games? 
I swam in Guernsey in 2003. I have been assistant coach three times; 2013 Bermuda, 2015 Jersey, 2019 Gibraltar. I was head coach in 2017 in Gotland.

What do you think your medal chances are like at this year’s Games? 
I am confident out team will do our best and hope to swim personal bests, we will see where that gets us!

What sport apart from your own, are you most looking forward to watching? 
I would like to watch the Triathlon Relay, if we get time. We have one of our girls doing both triathlon and swimming, so I hope to be able to support her.

Paul McCafferty, Holiday Programme Community Coach

Which sport/team are you representing and what is your role?
Jersey Men’s Football Athlete.

Is this your first Island Games?
Yes, this is my first Island Games.

What do you think your medal chances are like at this year’s Games?
We are aiming for Gold!!

What sport apart from your own, are you most looking forward to watching?
I am looking forward to watching golf and athletics.

Pierce Roche, Holiday Programme Community Coach

Which sport/team are you representing and what is your role? 
Jersey Men’s Football Athlete.

Is this your first Island Games? 
Yes, this is my first Island Games.

What do you think your medal chances are like at this year’s Games? 
I think we have a very good chance of getting a medal as we have strong and brilliant players in every position!

What sport apart from your own, are you most looking forward to watching? 
I am looking forward to watching a variety of sports while I’m there but I’m mostly looking forward to athletics.

Rob Armstrong, Schools PE Coach

Which sport/team are you representing and what is your role? 
Jersey Badminton Team Manager/Coach.

Is this your first Island Games? 
This is my fourth Island Games. I went in 2015 as tennis line judge, 2017 as coach and 2019 as player and coach.

What do you think your medal chances are like at this year’s Games? 
I think we have a couple of chances in the men’s singles and doubles and in the team event we are hoping to place in the top five.

What sport apart from your own, are you most looking forward to watching? 
I’m not sure I will have much time to watch many sports, but I’m keen to keep up to date with the Sailing and Football.

Jersey Men’s Football Athlete.

Yes, this is my first Island Games.

What do you think your medal chances are like at this year’s Games? 
I am confident we will get a medal!

What sport apart from your own, are you most looking forward to watching? 
I am excited to watch the Swimming events!
