Media and Communications Officer

Steven Anderson
About Me
I am Steven Anderson, Media & Communications Officer at Jersey Sport. I have a deep passion for sport and storytelling, and I’m fortunate to now combine both in a role that highlights the impact sport has across the island.
Role & Responsibilities
In my role at Jersey Sport, I lead on media and communications activity across the organisation. This includes managing digital channels, media relations, content creation, and supporting campaigns that reflect the breadth of programmes and initiatives delivered across Jersey. I am also overseeing Jersey Sport’s rebrand, helping to ensure the organisation’s identity, messaging, and visual presence are consistent, modern, and aligned with its purpose and direction.
I work closely with colleagues, partners, and stakeholders across the sporting landscape to communicate the organisation’s work and share the stories of participants, coaches, volunteers, and organisations in a meaningful way.
Career Journey
Sport has been a constant throughout my life. From a young age, I was drawn to competition and the jeopardy of winning and losing. At 13, I made the decision to focus fully on golf, which became my true sporting passion.
This journey led me to earn a golf scholarship in Dallas, Texas, where I competed collegiately at Texas Wesleyan University. Over four years, I had the opportunity to compete alongside some of the most talented players in the world. It was a hugely formative experience, both on and off the course, and ultimately gave me the clarity that while I was able to compete at a high level, a professional playing career was out of reach.
I returned to Jersey with a degree in Finance and initially entered the finance sector. However, it quickly became clear that it wasn’t the right fit for me, even though it took a fair amount of time to build the confidence to make a change.
That change came through an opportunity at the Jersey Evening Post as a Sports Reporter. This allowed me to combine my passion for sport with my work, telling the stories of athletes and sporting communities across Jersey. I found real purpose in helping to highlight the talent and depth within the island’s sporting landscape.
After 16 months, I was promoted to Sports Editor, where I was responsible for shaping the sports coverage across the paper. I took pride in ensuring a broad and diverse range of sports were represented, particularly those that were less mainstream and often underrepresented in traditional coverage.
My long-term ambition had always been to work for a charity, ideally a sport-focused one. When the opportunity arose to join Jersey Sport, it felt like the natural next step. It allowed me to stay close to the sporting world, while contributing to the wider development of sport on the island.
Qualifications & Skills
- BSc Finance, Texas Wesleyan University (Golf Scholarship)
- Sports journalism, media and editorial experience
- Communications and content strategy
- Social media and digital engagement
- Storytelling and feature writing
- Media relations and stakeholder communication
Philosophy / Approach
I believe sport has a unique ability to connect people, build communities, and create opportunity. My approach to communications is rooted in storytelling, ensuring that the people behind programmes, performances, and pathways are properly recognised and celebrated.
I also value clarity, accessibility, and authenticity in communication, making sure information about Jersey Sport is easy to understand and relevant to a wide audience.
Fun Facts / Personal Interests
My passion for golf faded somewhat after university. The environment was intense, and I reached a point where I was no longer enjoying it in the same way. I still play on occasion, although more recently my time has been taken up with welcoming a little one into the world, which has been the biggest change in my life outside of work.
Why Jersey Sport / Achievements & Highlights
Joining Jersey Sport gave me the opportunity to be part of an organisation shaping the future of sport across the island. I was drawn to the transition the organisation was undergoing and the chance to help build its profile and impact through strong, purposeful communication.
A key highlight of my time in the role has been leading the organisation’s rebrand, helping to redefine and strengthen Jersey Sport’s identity, messaging, and visual presence. This work has helped align how the organisation presents itself with the breadth and ambition of its work, and better position it to communicate its impact across the island.
One of the most rewarding aspects of the role is seeing how sport in Jersey connects people at every level, from grassroots participation through to high-performance pathways, and being part of communicating that wider story.
