Case study: ‘My Exercise Referral journey…and beyond!’ Female age 34
My journey with Exercise Referral started just over a year ago when I was referred by my GP with the aim for me to gain more physical strength after a long period of inactivity due to ill health. I was suffering with multiple health issues not only physically but also emotionally and mentally. This made even the idea of attending an initial assessment very challenging.
After building up enough courage to telephone the team to begin my referral I was immediately put at ease. Everything was clearly and patiently explained to me and all my questions and concerns were addressed in an understanding manner.
From this initial contact and throughout each session I received excellent support, advice and encouragement. I went from feeling very anxious, overwhelmed and physically weak to having less anxiety, more confidence and the difference physically was phenomenal.
As with many people who suffer from anxiety and depression, there were good and bad days. Some days were a real struggle but having a set day and time to attend gave me a positive routine and definition to my week. On these difficult days when I struggled more, I always felt a sense of achievement once I had battled through and made it to my session. It felt like a real “team effort”.
When my allocated Exercise Referral sessions were complete, I decided to continue my progress independently. Exercise has opened up a whole new world of opportunities for me, not just physically but also socially and mentally. Without the Exercise Referral scheme and access to such a vast choice of classes at all levels, I personally believe I would not be in such a positive place.
I would 100% recommend the Exercise Referral scheme to anyone who has the opportunity. It will positively change your health and enhance your life in more ways than you may think possible.
