New for 2025, Jersey Sport are delighted to launch a Volunteer Recognition Scheme to celebrate the island’s local sport volunteer workforce and recognise their contributions and achievements during the calendar year.
Each recognised Volunteer, selected through a short nomination process and reviewed by the Jersey Sport Team, will receive a £200 award for their sport organisation.
This is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the Volunteers that have a genuine impact on your sport organisation and give them the public recognition that they deserve!
Any sport Volunteer can be nominated and recognised, however Jersey Sport will only award funding to sport organisations that have obtained a ‘Green status’ from Jersey Sport’s Safe and Sustainable Sport Health Check.
Nominations for the Volunteer Recognition Scheme must be submitted by the 20th day of each month via the online submission form, linked below. Some examples of Volunteers who are eligible to be recognised through the scheme can include:
March 2025
Don Gardner – Jersey Rugby Club
Don has been a volunteer at Jersey Rugby Club for many years. He joined the club when his children were young, helping with coaching throughout the age groups as they grew older, and has now stayed on after they have left thanks to his passion for helping the next generation of rugby talent in Jersey. He is currently a coach in the Colts management team as well as being the Travel Coordinator for the whole minis section at the club, a job which demands hours of planning to ensure the young rugby stars can travel away to play exciting matches which will help with their development. By the end of the season Don will have arranged 60 away fixtures for Minis, Juniors and Colts, which shows how vital he is for everyone who are on those trips to both Guernsey and the South of England. As a coach he is respected by both fellow coaches, as well as the players themselves and helps guide both to further their skills. Being labelled by those who nominated him as ‘an integral cog in the JRFC Minis & Juniors machine’, it is clear to see Don has made an incredible impact on so many in his roles over his time as a volunteer at the club and is a worthy winner of this award.
Max Treharne – Jersey Water Polo Association
Max has been a volunteer for a decade and is the current Co-President at the ever-growing club. Having played for many years, Max was keen to give something back to the sport he loves so much. As Co-President he has a number of tasks and one that stands out was the planning of the Jersey Water Polo Associations 50th anniversary celebrations which was a great success last July with a fully subscribed tournament down at Havre Des Pas. He also coaches a number of teams, including U12 and U16 sessions in the junior set up, a mixed senior session and the ladies session. Each of these sessions are on every week, covering some of Max’s Saturday and Sunday, as well as his Wednesday evenings. His impact has seen the number of attendees in both the junior and women’s sessions increase significantly. As well as volunteering, Max is very much still part of the men’s side as well, which further highlights his love for the sport! Away from the pool he also does a lot of the admin for the club, making sure the club is being run smoothly behind the scenes, and ensuring players just need to turn up and enjoy the sport! He is respected by all at JWPA and is a deserved winner of the award.
