Jersey Sport launch new SPORTIN SCHOOLS Programme distributing £50,000 to sports

Thursday 3 October 2024

Jersey Sport launch new SPORTIN SCHOOLS Programme distributing £50,000 to sports to create equitable pathways for primary children to access local sport

  • The SPORTIN SPORT Programme aims to respond to the needs and demands of sport by improving community sport links, pathways, and access to junior members for sustained and prolonged engagement with sport and physical activity.
  • Jersey Sport are delivering this initiative through a partnership-driven approach working with eight local sport organisations and eight primary schools.
  • The programme has evolved from the previously distributed Move More Schools Grant and will distribute £50,000 in 2024, with the hope to grow the fund in future years if the pilot project is successful.
  • All eight sport organisations involved in the delivery of the SPORTIN SCHOOLS Programme will receive an equal proportion of the £50,000 funding for their delivery during the 24/25 academic year, meaning each sport organisation will be awarded £6,250.

Jersey Sport are delighted to announce the launch of a new SPORTIN SPORT pilot programme to support local primary schools during the 2024/25 academic year. The programme will see £50,000 distributed to eight local sport organisations to be used for things such as paid coaching to deliver sport in schools due to a lack of volunteer capacity, purchase of additional kit or equipment to enable delivery away from their sport setting, or for creating an inclusion fund to provide free or subsidised membership/kit opportunities for students, helping to remove the financial barriers to participation.

Jersey Sport has coordinated the timetable of activity between the sports and schools to ensure fair and appropriate access for all stakeholders involved. This has been achieved by matching the needs of the schools with the resource and intent of sports. Jersey Sport’s involvement also responds to the needs of sports and schools by reducing the administrative burden on staff and volunteers, whilst increasing access to sport within the school setting. The programme will see sports deliver in schools for three terms, starting in November 2024.

The primary schools involved include:

  • Grands Vaux
  • La Moye
  • Mont à L’Abbé
  • St John
  • Grouville
  • Mont Nicolle
  • Trinity
  • St Saviour

The sports involved include:

  • Netball, delivered by the Jersey Netball Association
  • Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, delivered by Gracie Barra CI
  • Padel, delivered by Padel for All
  • Kickboxing, delivered by Samurai Kickboxing
  • Squash, delivered by Jersey Squash and Racketball Association
  • Softball, delivered by Jersey Softball Association
  • Cricket, delivered by Jersey Cricket
  • Rugby, delivered by Jersey Rugby Football Club

Elliot Powell, Head of Sport and Physical Activity at Jersey Sport said, “We are delighted to be able to invest in local sport organisations with this new SPORTIN SCHOOLS pilot programme. With £6,250 being distributed to each of the eight sports, who were successful through the robust application process, we are excited to see how the access to engaging and high-quality external sport provision inspires our next generation of islanders to become physically active.

Our team are looking forward to working closely with the passionate and dedicated volunteers of each sport organisation as together, we look to remove barriers to activity such as cost or location, to ensure sport is accessible for all young people regardless of their background. We would like to thank the Government of Jersey for their support in reshaping this programme, and hope to be able to repeat it, even increasing the level of distribution on an annual basis.”
