Gracie Barra CI have created an exemplary inclusive environment, welcoming anybody and everybody to enjoy the sport of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Jersey.
In 2023, the club was successful in receiving a Volunteer Workforce Grant from Jersey Sport to support the development of their sports workforce. Three instructors undertook the Gracie Barra Instructor Certification Programme, bringing them in line with best practice for teaching Jiu Jitsu through recognised Gracie Barra Europe and Worldwide qualification standards.
Since upskilling new coaches, Gracie Barra CI introduced an additional bi-weekly adult class and now have additional coach support for their kids’ classes to strengthen their child-to-instructor ratios. From the newly qualified coach cohort, a bilingual instructor now provides additional support to students who may find the English language more challenging than others; and the new adult’s class is run by Stuart Penn, a para-athlete who promotes inclusivity and embodies their ethos of ‘Jiu Jitsu for everyone’.
These new instructors have provided additional skillsets to Gracie Barra CI to support new and existing students varying needs. The club are delighted to have welcomed individuals with learning difficulties and visual impairments into their adult classes, with a new visually impaired student recently gaining their first stripe! The coach’s qualification also included content specifically aimed at women’s programmes which has supported the development of their thriving female-only sessions.
The club has big plans to continue supporting and welcoming any islander who wishes to try Jiu Jitsu. If you’re interested in having a go, you can find contact details for Gracie Barra CI in our Sports Directory:
