Jersey Sport get more islanders off their sofa and onto their saddles with their range of free cycling programmes!

Friday 24 March 2023

With the first day of spring just around the corner, Jersey Sport are encouraging more islanders to get on their bike and try one of their many free Move More group cycling programmes, available for beginners through to more advanced cyclists.

48% of adults in Jersey are not active enough to support good mental and physical health, and of those, 9% less women in the island meet the World Health Organisation’s activity guidelines of doing at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per week.

Deputy Lucy Stephenson, Assistant Minister for Economic Development with responsibility for Sport said: “Only 52% of adults in Jersey are meeting the recommended guidelines on being active, compared to 61% in England. Jersey Sport is therefore working hard on behalf of the government to encourage and motivate people to become more active, more often. These cycling programmes are an important part of that work and present a great opportunity for islanders to get involved at various levels. And by encouraging more islanders to cycle and actively travel we can also start to make an impact on Jersey’s Carbon Neutral Roadmap.”

The Move More Cycle programme run by Jersey Sport is provided free to islanders, thanks to funding received from the Government of Jersey.  It’s designed especially for those who need some support to cycle and to help get people started on their cycling journey. We offer Adult Learn to Ride for complete beginners who can’t yet pedal a bike, or who are unconfident riding a bike, progressing onto Sofa2Saddle, for those who may have learnt to cycle, but need some support to feel more confident when riding, through to Gaining Momentum which is designed to add saddle time to your cycle rides, to help boost your confidence on different routes and terrain.

Claudia Andrade, Community Engagement and Inclusion Officer at Jersey Sport said, “If you’ve never ridden a bike before, or feel you need to gain more confidence when cycling, we’re here to help find a cycle ride or programme to suit you and start you on your cycling journey. Cycling is not only good for you, it’s great for the environment and our small group rides enable you to meet new people whilst improving your fitness!

Also on offer is a timetable of Women Only rides and Mixed Rides at six different ability levels. Each of the rides are designed to help cyclists build confidence and are a great way to discover new routes around the island, whilst helping to improve your mental and physical wellbeing.

The rides are led by our friendly and qualified Ride Leader volunteers who have undertaken the British Cycling Ride Leaders course and are experienced in supporting people throughout their cycling journey.
