Active Adults launches to get islanders back playing sport

Monday 14 May 2018

Islanders are being given encouragement and the opportunity to get into sport and active living with a new Active Adults programme unveiled today by Jersey Sport.

The series of weekly activities, sponsored by offshore law firm Appleby, kicks off at venues across the island from mid-June.

Walking football, “Padel” tennis, martial arts, bat and chat table-tennis, badminton and walking netball along with general movement sessions will all be available on a “turn-up and play” basis.

“We want to make it easy for adults to reignite their love for sport,” said Jersey Sport General Manager David Kennedy.

“We understand that sometimes life takes over and there are other priorities such as bringing up families and work. But we want to give a clear pathway back in, making these sessions fun and accessible while giving people the chance to make new friends too.

“Whether you played netball as a child and then couldn’t find the time to play anymore, or if you’ve never played but have recently lost a loved one and simply need to get out of the house and meet new people, there are all kinds of benefits islanders can take away from this programme.

“We’re working closely with local sports associations to run these activities, ensuring each session is overseen by a specialist in their field. We’re thankful to Appleby for their support which has enabled us to keep the costs really low for participants.”

An Active Adults open morning, at Fort Regent on the 16th of June, will mark the start of the new programme. Over-18s are invited to head to the Gloucester Hall from 10am to midday to learn more about what is offer, and to try some of the sports as a free taster.

“Appleby is proud to continue its support of Jersey Sport for a second year and is delighted to sponsor their new Active Adults programme,” said David Dorgan, partner with Appleby.

“We’re all aware of the importance of maintaining regular exercise and we believe that this programme provides a fantastic opportunity for adults within our community to either discover sport for the first time or get back in to sport, regardless of fitness level, age or ability.”

Full details of the new sessions are on the Jersey Sport website – jerseysport.je/activities. Participants will be asked for cash payment, of just £3 to £5, on arrival at each session.
