Jersey Sport gets more islanders active with launch of Move More Swim and Adult Learn to Ride!

Thursday 6 January 2022

Jersey Sport is delighted to launch two new programmes, to help get islanders more physically active.

Move More Swim is a new indoor swimming programme aimed at adults who are nervous swimmers who haven’t swum before, or for those who need support to get back into their swimming journey. There are two levels of Move More Swim classes available – one for complete beginners and the other for those wanting to improve their strokes and techniques.

Both Move More Swim programmes will take place once a week, over a course of 12 weeks, at Les Quennevais Sports Centre swimming pool – with beginners starting in the shallow, warm pool to begin with, within standing depth. The beginners’ classes will focus on gaining confidence in the water, along with basic swimming skills (aided and unaided) with our friendly, qualified swim coaches teaching floating, kicking and learning how to breathe. The intermediate classes are for those who may want to improve their range of swimming strokes, techniques, skills, and fitness – people wishing to participate will need to be confident in the pool out of their depth and be able to swim from one end of the 25m pool to the other. Both Move More Swim courses are available to book for the 12 weeks at: www.movemore.je/swim-more

Move More Adult Learn to Ride is a free cycling course designed for adult beginners who can’t yet pedal a bike, or who are extremely unconfident riding a bike. Our friendly, qualified cycling instructors will help and support people at the start of their cycling journey to progress their cycling ability gradually.

There will be four 6-week programmes running throughout 2022 – two of which based at the Freedom Tree in St Helier, and two based at Les Quennevais cycle track. Sessions will start with the basics of cycling and prepare people to get on and off their bike, progressing towards how to balance their bike and pedal alone in time. The first four weeks of the programme will focus on balance skills, bike handling and control. The final two weeks of the programme will feature a short, guided ride in a traffic-free environment. Cirsty de Gruchy, Head of Move More Jersey said, “If you’ve thought about learning how to swim or ride a bike this year as one of your new year’s resolutions, now’s your chance! Our Move More Jersey classes are a great way to meet new people, and a great way to improve your fitness. We’re delighted to have developed our new Move More Swim programme to increase islander’s swimming skills and thrilled to be running Move More Learn to Ride for adults, to enable more people to cycle and actively travel.”
