2025 EASTER Family Group Cycle Training – NEW!

All riders must be able to cycle independently. We can incorporate adaptive bikes, cargo bikes, e-bikes and cycles with child seats into the sessions.

Required equipment: a roadworthy cycle, a helmet that fits correctly & is free from cracks, water bottle and some snacks in a backpack riders can ride with. Suitable clothing (loose items like skirts, baggy trousers and unzipped jackets are not suitable for cycling).

What is Family Cycle Training & how does it work?

Family Cycle is a training course to help people cycle together and complements the cycle training for children and adults which we already offer. It enables families, or friends with children to plan enjoyable group rides, consider switching from driving to cycling the school run and feel more confident to support their children to become capable cyclists. Whether you are relative novices to cycling or you all ride already but would like advice on specific routes your instructor will tailor the session to meet your needs. The session will be delivered by fully qualified National Standard Instructor/s who will tailor the training to meet the needs of each family.

Sessions are for up to 6 people, there needs to be at least one child (under 18) and one adult (over 18) at the session. All riders must be able to cycle & stop without wobbling before taking part. Training will begin off main roads (In Green lanes / Cycle Infrastructure where possible) and move on to larger, busier roads once your instructor feels everyone is ready. Please be aware that where groups have very different ages or abilities, instructors need to pace training to suit the least able.

The instructor/s will meet the family in a central location and the training will progress onto local roads, based around on and off-road routes that you wish to cycle together. We also cover cycling as a group and protective riding strategies.

During the session riders may learn to:

  • Plan a journey – this could from home to school
  • Plan to and ride assertively everywhere cycling is permitted
  • Maintain suitable riding positions in the road
  • Cooperate with and respect other road users (including avoiding driver blind spots and riding with others)
  • Pass queuing traffic and use junctions controlled by traffic lights (if present)
  • Use cycle infrastructure and multi lane roads (if present)
  • Ride on roads with speeds above 30 mph (if present)

We highly encourage you to bring your own cycle if you have access to one. However, Jersey sport have a small fleet of cycles and helmets available for loan upon prior request on a first come first serve basis. Please contact cycleteam@jerseysport.je with your child’s height (cm), inside leg length (cm) and the dates/course your child will be attending If you would like to arrange the loan of a cycle / helmet for one of our courses.
