2024 EASTER LEVEL 1 + 2 COMBINED CYCLE TRAINING (SCHOOL YEARS 5+)(3 day course – must complete all days to pass)

Things to bring: a roadworthy bike, a helmet that fits correctly & free from cracks, water bottle and some snacks inside a backpack they can ride with. Suitable clothing (loose items like skirts, baggy trousers and unzipped jackets are not suitable for cycling).

Requirements: This course is suitable for children in School Year 5 and above. Riders MUST be able to ride confidently, competently and consistently in a traffic free environment. This involves starting and stopping with control and steering the bike safely and accurately.  This course combines the Cycle Training level 1 and 2 syllabuses to allow those who have not yet undertaken the level 1 but are ready to take on the challenge of level 2 the opportunity to participate.

The Cycle Training Level 2 course aims to develop riders’ skills and confidence for cycling on single-lane roads and simple junctions with mostly moderate motor traffic flows (where riders encounter vehicles with progressively greater frequency in each module), and prepares riders for cycling on more complex, often busier or faster roads and junctions. Riders must have fully demonstrated that they are confident with the Cycle Training Level 1 assessment criteria before they start Cycle Training Level 2 training. Please note that if riders are unable to demonstrate level 1 skills confidently in a playground scenario on this course they will not be allowed to progress onto the road in these sessions.

At Level 1 riders learn to:

  • Prepare themselves for a journey
  • Check the cycle is ready for a journey
  • Set off- pedal- slow down and stop appropriately
  • looking behind
  • cycling one handed
  • avoiding obstacles
  • turning and controlling speed
  • Riding in singles and pairs as part of a group

At level 2 riders learn to:

  • Cycle safely, responsibly, identify and respond to hazards
  • Start and stop on-road journeys
  • Maintain suitable riding positions in the road
  • Share the road with others and communicate with other road users
  • Comply with signals, signs and road markings
  • Manage risk whilst cycling
  • Negotiate junctions (pass side roads, turn at T junctions and crossroads).
