The Jersey Water Polo Association have been breaking down barriers to participation in the aim of increasing their female membership.
Throughout summer 2023, the JWPA team launched a new initiative to help attract new females into their sport. With support from a successful grant to the Jersey Community Foundation’s Sport and Active Lifestyle’s Fund, they were able to launch a free 6-week taster programme which aimed to encourage more women and girls into water polo. The sessions focused on basic water polo skills in a relaxed and friendly environment, with no prior water polo experience required. The programme was a huge success with their senior female membership growing from 4 to 24 and their junior females up to 16 members!
This funding has also supported the JWPA to offer free adult and junior sessions, replace ageing equipment, run an international water polo tournament at Harve des Pas and upskill their officials. These exciting developments have certainly kept them busy, all the while contributing to their overarching aim of increasing the profile and engagement with water polo in Jersey.
