ARCHERY ASSOCIATION OF JERSEY

Despite being one of the smaller sports on island, the Archery Association of Jersey have been working hard to up-skill their local volunteers to continue to support the development of local archery opportunities.

As recipients of funding support from Jersey Sport’s Volunteer Workforce Grant in 2023, the Archery Association of Jersey held three separate upskilling opportunities for their athletes and coaches, raising the quality of archery provision on island.

Phillipa Lowe and Martin Oakley, Archery GB Level 3/4 coaches visited the two clubs to share their technical expertise and experience with local volunteers. Exposure to these coaches’ knowledge is hugely valuable to the local community due to the particular and niche skillsets archery demands. A two-day equipment workshop was also held by Phil Adams, ensuring athletes and coaches were able to use their kit as effectively as possible by individualising their set up.

In 2023, 14 local Archers attended the Island Games in Guernsey with Jersey topping the medal table for their sport. Archery placed 3rd overall in the final medal haul for the island, behind Swimming and Athletics. This would not have been possible without the previous coaching and development opportunities that Archery have received over many years, which they plan to continue going forward.

Archery benefits from being a widely accessible sport. We have recently been working with the Archery Association of Jersey and their two member clubs to help formulate a development plan for the sport to increase their reach and grow participation locally.
