2025 Bikeability Level 1 – School Years 3+

Riders MUST already be able to start, stop, pedal and turn before attending this course.  

The Level 1 course aims to develop mastery in cycle handling in a traffic free environment and prepare riders for cycling on the road. Please note riders will only cycle on the road in Cycle Training Levels 2 and 3. 

At Level 1 riders learn to:  

• Prepare themselves for a journey 

• Check the cycle is ready for a journey 

• Set off- pedal- slow down and stop appropriately 

• Looking behind  

• Cycling one handed 

• Avoiding obstacles 

• Turning and controlling speed 

• Riding in singles and pairs as part of a group 

Things to bring: a roadworthy bike, a fitted helmet, water bottle, snack. Suitable clothing (loose items like skirts, baggy trousers and unzipped jackets are not suitable for cycling). 

Weather: Please bring weather appropriate clothing to the session. We encourage gloves/warm zipped up jackets in cold weather and waterproof clothing in case it rains. For colder days we encourage warm layers and gloves. For sunny days please bring sun cream and light layers for sun protection as well as plenty of water. Please note due to the nature of these sessions they will be weather dependant and should the winds/rain be very strong on the day causing a hazard coaches will decide whether the session is safe to go ahead. If coaches judge the weather to be unsafe to ride in, parents will be informed 2 hours before and payment can be re-used for another course or refunded. 

We highly encourage you to bring your own cycle if you have access to one. However, Jersey Sport have a small fleet of cycles available for loan upon prior request on a first come first serve basis. Please email cycleteam@jerseysport.je with your child’s height (cm), inside leg length (cm) and the dates/course your child will be attending If you would like to arrange the loan of a cycle / helmet for one of our courses.
As a parent or guardian, you are welcome to stay and observe but we respectfully ask that you do not enter the teaching area during the session.
