Jersey Sport gets more islanders active in the open water!

Monday 20 June 2022

This summer, Jersey Sport continue to inspire an active Jersey and get more islanders swimming safely in the sea, with the return of Swim Safe for local school children and the launch of a new open water swimming programme for adults.

Swim Safe, the water safety programme for children created by Swim England and the RNLI, returns to educate approximately 1,000 children aged 9 -10 years old, from 31 of the island’s primary schools, about how to stay safe in and around Jersey’s waters, in partnership with the Bosdet Foundation.

Since launching with a single site in 2013, Swim Safe has grown to include more than 70 sites across England, Scotland, Wales, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. The free swim safety sessions, run by qualified Swim Safe instructors and beach lifeguards, will take place from 16 June to 1 July at various beaches around the island and teach children a range of skills to stay safe when they are swimming in the sea.

Alan Le Pavoux, Charity Manager at the Bosdet Foundation said, “Swim Safe is vital to give children in our island as many opportunities and experiences as possible. Swim Safe not only teaches vital water safety skills – it opens up opportunities to experience one of our island greatest assets – our beaches. We are so proud to be supporting the initiative again this year, working with Jersey Sport.”

Martine Le Guilcher, Jersey Sport’s Swimming Development Officer said, “we’re extremely proud to be supporting Swim Safe again this year, to ensure local children receive the correct messages about how to stay safe in and around Jersey’s waters, and we’re excited to be launching our new open water swimming programme for adults – to enable more islanders to discover the joys of sea swimming safely.”

From 4 July, Jersey Sport will be offering a Move More Adult Open Water Swimming for adults – to enable more islanders to enjoy outdoor swimming in a fun and relaxed way, to improve their mental and physical wellbeing and to provide the opportunity to enjoy a safe, supervised swim within a supportive and encouraging group setting.

The swim sessions will be led by Qualified Open Water Swimming Coaches who are supported by experienced and trained volunteers, ensuring the swims are as friendly, sociable and inclusive as possible. Swimmers are encouraged to meet up in a nearby café afterwards, so they can enjoy socialising with other swimmers.
