International stars in the running as shortlists revealed

Thursday 1 November 2018

Commonwealth Games stars Serena Guthrie, Cameron Pirouet and Harry Shalamon along with GB archer Lucy O’Sullivan and international BMXer Alex Coleborn are all in the running for one of the top honours at Jersey Sport’s first RaceNation Sport and Active Living Awards.

The five elite performers have made the shortlist for the Sports Performance of the Year, sponsored by Accuro Fiduciary.

About 150 nominations were received across the categories, with more than 200 people expected to be at next week’s gala dinner at the Royal Yacht to find out who wins.

Jersey Parkrun organisers Matt Cuthbert and Sam Horsfall are on the shortlist in the Volunteer of the Year category, along with Jersey Reds fixtures secretary Kate Innes, fishing’s Bob McGinnigle and triathlon’s Dougie Smith.

Seven of Jersey’s sporting legends from years gone by will become the first to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, sponsored by Ocorian.

“We were so pleased with the amount of nominations and in particular the number of sports that put someone forward, from snooker to rugby, from golf to football,” said Jersey Sport board member Jean Cross.

“The judging panel had some tough decisions to make, particularly around the schools category with some great initiatives for us to consider. When you see the names in the running for the Hall of the Fame you really realise just what brilliant success stories we’ve had in this island over so many years.”

The ceremony will be streamed live on Jersey Sport’s Facebook page and website.

Will Golder from title sponsors RaceNation added: “We’re really excited to be associated with these awards and it should be a memorable night for everyone concerned. As a sports technology company this event is a perfect fit for us and we look forward to celebrating the success of all the nominees.

“Sportsmen and women from Jersey punch well above their weight in so many ways and it’s only right that they’re recognised and rewarded for their efforts at a high-profile event such as this one. As a previous athlete I know the blood, sweat and tears, as well as determination and sometimes difficulty involved in achieving success and so I am really glad we can be part of this celebration.”

The inaugural RaceNation Sport and Active Living Awards will be presented on Thursday 8th November, with a 6.30pm start at the Royal Yacht.
