Bagatelle Schools Walking Bus Sets the Pace for Active Travel
Applications are now open for local sports organisations to join the 2026/27 SPORTIN SCHOOLS Programme, as Jersey Sport confirms a £95,000 funding boost for the upcoming academic year.
The investment reinforces Jersey Sport’s ongoing commitment to expanding opportunities for children and young people across the island, contributing towards a total of £1 million being reinvested into local sport in 2026.
The SPORTIN SCHOOLS Programme continues to play a vital role in introducing pupils to a wide variety of sports within the school environment. By creating positive first experiences, the initiative helps young people build confidence, develop skills, and form lifelong connections with sport and physical activity.
Over the past two years, the programme has delivered 21 different sports across 26 primary schools and one secondary school. Activities have ranged from traditional sports to newer opportunities such as skateboarding, kickboxing and padel — ensuring there is something to engage every child, regardless of their interests or abilities.
Following the success of a secondary school pilot at Beaulieu, the programme will continue to expand into secondary education for 2026/27.
The pilot demonstrated strong impact in engaging young people at a critical stage, where participation in physical activity often declines. By introducing new and varied sporting experiences during early teenage years, the programme aims to retain more young people in sport while strengthening pathways into community participation beyond school.
Jersey Sport is now encouraging local sports organisations to apply to be part of the programme and help deliver engaging, high-quality sessions in schools across the island.
Increasing the diversity of sports on offer remains a key priority, ensuring every pupil has the chance to discover an activity they enjoy — supporting both physical wellbeing and long-term participation.
All Government of Jersey non-fee-paying primary schools and all secondary schools are eligible to take part in the programme. Participating schools receive fully funded delivery for one school term, with Jersey Sport coordinating the programme to reduce administrative burden.
This collaborative approach enables schools to access high-quality coaching and a wide range of sports providers, enriching their physical education offer and better meeting the needs of their pupils.
