FINANCIAL SUSTAINBILITY FOR YOUR SPORT

Due to a combination of rising living costs and islanders having less access to disposable income, sport is feeling the pressure to keep its offer accessible whilst balancing meeting the demands of running costs and overheads to continue providing local sport. Securing sponsorship and alternative income streams can also sometimes feel highly competitive and unachievable.

Recognising these challenges, we’ve pulled together some information and tips to help your organisation access funding that’s available and help generate more income to support your sport organisations plans to assist with sustainability and growth.

Listen to what some local sports have to say about financial sustainability for their sport in the short video below:

MAIN WAYS TO GENERATE REVENUE AND INCOME FOR YOUR SPORT

1) RAISING MONEY THROUGH FUNDRAISING AND DONATIONS

Crowdfunding initiatives are a great way to engage your members and the local community in your ambitions and to help invest in your future. Sport organisations can set up an online fundraising portal using platforms like Crowdfunder or GoFundMe and start raising cash! Doing this successfully and hitting your funding target requires a lot of thought and planning, so it’s recommended to get some helpful volunteers on board who will be willing to support your efforts.

You can also use online fundraising platforms for collecting donations that allow Jersey residents to claim ‘Gift Aid’ tax relief. Take a look at Race Nation’s ‘SportsGiving’ for more information:

3) SETTING YOUR MEMBERSHIP SUBSCRIPTIONS

What membership options does your sport offer? Are your fees competitive? Participants often want to access sport quickly and ‘try before they buy’ through taster sessions or introductory packages. Can you offer this through smaller-scale incentives before they sign up to a full membership?

Does your membership allow members to pay in different ways that meet their needs, and are these methods reviewed regularly? Different offers like ‘pay and play’ or offering monthly direct debit can help participants manage the cost of playing your sport, as opposed to a one-off lump sum membership payment.

3) Becoming a Registered Jersey Charity

An organisation may apply to become a registered charity if it has a written constitution and is either a Jersey entity or carries out substantial activity in or from within Jersey. It must also meet the ‘charity test’ – meaning it must show it has only charitable purposes and benefits the public in giving effect to those purposes, for example, “for the advancement of public participation in sport”.

There are a number of benefits for sport organisations to become a registered Jersey charity, for example:

  • Profile – being a regulated organisation can assure your current and future users of public goodwill and trust. All Jersey charities are listed on the register, which anyone can view online at any time.
  • Receiving donations – some funders may only consider registered charities when donating funds or are restricted to only contributing charitably by the terms of their organisation.
  • Tax relief – registered Jersey charities receive certain tax exemptions which can help reduce the cost of large capital investments associated with purchasing kit, equipment or upgrading your sport’s facilities.

If your sport organisation is considering becoming a registered Jersey charity, there are several things you will have to do before applying to be registered. More information can be found on the Jersey Charity Commissioner’s website:

4) GENERATING INCOME THROUGH SERVICE DELIVERY

This is when a school, company, charity, Government department or other individual pays you to deliver a given service. For example, delivering coaching sessions in schools, or hiring of your clubhouse for birthday parties or events. Exploring opportunities to deliver services for organisations with financial remuneration can be a great way to generate revenue and income for your sport.

5) SECURING FUNDING AND GRANTS

As well as the funding available through Jersey Sport, there are other small and large funding opportunities that are accessible to charitable and not-for-profit sport organisations through local companies, organisations and charities. New funding opportunities often become available, and members within your sport organisation may know of some match-funding schemes within local workplaces that support good causes.

Local sport organisations may also be able to access funding through their National Governing Body (NGB) or World Federation (WF) for specific projects or by aligning to their strategic aims.
