Children with disabilities in the island, and their families (including siblings), are being invited to a FREE fun morning of sport at FB Fields.
The ‘Sportability Family Morning’ will give children the opportunity to enjoy sports such as athletics (track and field), boccia, frame football, martial arts and table-tennis.
“Disability shouldn’t be a barrier to taking part in sport,” said Dan Garton, Community Programmes Officer for Jersey Sport, which is running the morning.
“The morning will be a fantastic chance for children to have fun with other participants, to maybe try a sport they haven’t had the chance to play before, and to potentially make new friends.
“The morning also doubles up as a bit of a fact-finding mission for us, to see which sports are popular with the children so we can look to offer more, regular opportunities in the future.”
The ‘Sportability Family Morning’ will run from 9.30am until midday on Saturday 21st July and has been designed for children with disabilities or complex needs.
“Families have told us that they would like their children to access more sports and this fun morning is a great way for families to enjoy activities together,” said Nikki Holmes, Community Short Breaks Development Officer at Health and Social Services Child Development and Therapy Centre.
Cormac Timothy, father of a child with autism and a representative of Jersey’s Parent Carer Forum added: “The Sportability Family Morning is a great initiative from Jersey Sport – a time when children with disabilities or complex needs can have fun and try out a range of sports in a non-threatening environment with their siblings and families. I urge as many families as possible to give it a go.”
Families should register beforehand by emailing email@example.com but will also be able to sign-up on the day. Parents, carers or keyworkers must accompany the children throughout the morning.
