Jersey Hockey were awarded £13,789 from the SUPPORTIN SPORT Fund 2024 to deliver two community development projects. These included Goalkeeper and Coach workforce development opportunities, as well as facility improvements to support the growth and sustainability of their existing player pathway programmes. The initiatives together benefitted 661 participants.
At their home at Les Quennevais, the funding was used to upgrade the floodlights on the main hockey pitch, making it safer to deliver evening sessions and winter play. Lighting was also added to their previously un-lit training pitch, turning an underused space into a hub for weeknight hockey. The introduction of and improvements to floodlights at this facility has increased capacity into Jersey Hockey’s popular and ever-growing community programmes. This additionality particularly supported the growth of their successful adult ‘Back to Hockey’ programme by providing additional training time and creating a stronger pathway into the competitive leagues.
The workforce development training provided elite-level coaching for Goalkeepers and their coaches to develop their understanding about the technique, agility and confidence required throughout the season. Jersey Hockey also provided 20 local coaches with free access to England Hockey’s Coaching Roadshow – a unique opportunity to develop their skills on-island.
The initiative had a strong impact on Jersey Hockey’s strategic development by providing enhanced ability to develop and utilise their Les Quennevais facility, whilst continuing to provide targeted opportunities for under-represented groups to access hockey. Jersey Hockey’s new focus is to support the work of their new Hockey Development Officer, who’s role was part-funded by Jersey Sport’s SUPPORTIN SPORT Fund 2025, to enhance and grow the community hockey pathways for islanders to get involved in the sport.
