The Surfyard (in partnership with Mama Surf Club) were awarded £5,000 in Round 1 of the 2025 fund, to provide a 12-week surf and childcare programme to help more mums in Jersey access the mental and physical benefits of the ocean in a safe, supported, and affordable way. The initiatives are expected to directly benefit over 35 participants through the award received by the SUPPORTIN SPORT Fund.
Founded in 2024, Mama Surf Club is on a mission is to support mothers of young children in Jersey through the healing power of the ocean by making surfing accessible, safe, and community driven. With postnatal mental health concerns and isolation on the rise, they have created a strong community of mums with children under four who benefit from time in ‘blue space’—proven to improve both mental and physical wellbeing. The current surf-and-childcare rotation model has grown rapidly in popularity, but safety and limited surf windows pose challenges. The next step is to launch a 12-week, professionally coached surf course at The Surfyard in St Ouen’s Bay, complete with on-site childcare. With funding support, this course will be subsidised to ensure accessibility for mums of all backgrounds, offering them a much-needed opportunity to reconnect with themselves, their fitness, and other like-minded women.
