The Jersey Table Tennis Association (JTTA) have been awarded £8,000 in 2024 to deliver a targeted community programme to increase participation levels of their lowest retained player pools. The initiative is expected to directly benefit around 100 participants through the award received by the SUPPORTIN SPORT Fund.
The funding will activate additional coaching resource to deliver a two-year programme focused on providing quality coaching for league players aged 21-40 and Intermediate Juniors. The latter aims to engage teenagers to avoid their participation drop-off, and support the smooth transition into senior competitive leagues. The free-to-access programmes will involve technical coaching sessions twice a week to encourage new and returning players into the sport.
The JTTA’s two funded projects both kicked off in September 2024 and have had some great successes since their launches.
The Adult Membership training sessions (for league players aged 21-40) has been delivered by Luc Miller (British Men’s Champion 2021) who is a UKCC Level 2 coach. Two new weekly training sessions (Wednesdays 19.00-20.30 and Sundays 10.00-12.00) have attracted good attendance numbers and welcomed almost 30 new members as a result of the new sessions. The offer of these additional coached sessions to existing members also hopes to improve member retention and competitive league entries, strengthening the current established player pathways.
The Intermediate Junior weekly sessions (Wednesdays 17.30-19.00) have complemented the existing Junior Beginner weekly sessions run by voluntary UKCC Level 1 and 2 qualified coaches by providing a direct feed into the new junior intermediate sessions and then into performance sessions as part of the junior player pathway. This new structure has helped to welcome 33 new junior beginner members and launch a new Division 4 league (20 players – 10 teams of 2 players).
The funding provided by Jersey Sport’s SUPPORTIN SPORT Fund enables both of these initiatives to be delivered over the next 18 months.
