The Jersey Smallbore Shooting Association (JSSA) have been awarded £7,800 in 2024 to support the delivery of a two-part project that aims to increase participation in smallbore shooting. The initiative is expected to directly benefit around 150 participants through the award received by the SUPPORTIN SPORT Fund.
The organisation has identified their current kit and equipment offer isn’t fit-for-purpose, nor appealing to attract new female participants into the sport. In order to welcome and retain new members, the JSSA will be using their award to purchase adjustable shooting jackets which will help ensure participants feel comfortable and ‘part of the crowd’ with well-fitting armour. This new equipment also aims to reduce the financial burden on new members, allowing shooters to rent jackets or conduct a ‘try before you buy’ service. The activation of this initiative is one moving part of many that a larger targeted initiative to grow the number of teenage girls accessing shooting.
Finally, the funding will provide a 75% contribution of the associated costs to support the ongoing development of their local coaches. An experienced off-island instructor will be creating coach development plans and delivering on-island training sessions for shooters and local coaches. Resources will be created to share with new and more coaches beyond this upskilling opportunity. This aim of the project is to support coaches to have the confidence to engage new members regardless of their background or skill level, ensuring the quality and sustainability of their ever-expanding community shooting offer.
