Jersey Shotokan Karate were awarded £6,082 in 2024 to deliver a three-part project. This features an over 55’s targeted initiative, workforce development for coaches and aspiring officials, and on-island karate competitions involving all local Japanese Karate clubs. The initiatives are expected to directly benefit over 100 participants through the award received by the SUPPORTIN SPORT Fund.
Jersey Shotokan Karate’s targeted 55+ programme aims to attract and grow membership within this underrepresented age demographic by offering a free two-year programme, fully funded through this award. Funding has also been awarded to support 75% of costs associated with the club’s upcoming workforce development opportunities for coaches and aspiring officials. The SUPPORTIN SPORT Fund award will also support the delivery of an on-island Karate competition between the nine local Japanese Karate clubs on island. There are currently no competitive on-island opportunities for participants, so this funding will ensure the start of a new collaboration between local sport organisations through the creation of an association for Japanese Karate clubs, spearheaded by Jersey Shotokan Karate and this award.
Jersey Shotokan Karate’s targeted over 55’s sessions have now launched, already proving a huge success with many of these individuals transitioning into their mainstream classes. Plans around their local karate competition are also underway ready to launch in 2025.
