Jersey Rugby Association have been awarded £7,155 in 2024 to support the delivery of a three-part project that aims to increase participation in grassroots rugby. The initiative is expected to directly benefit around 300 participants through the award received by the SUPPORTIN SPORT Fund.
The first funded project is a targeted initiative to engage females aged 12-18 in contact rugby. Delivered by the Jersey Rugby Football Club (JRFC), they will utilise focus groups to help gain feedback on how to encourage more teenagers to get involved in the sport. This will help shape a targeted marketing initiative in advance of holding their annual girls open day in October 2024. The overall aim is to engage new players and feed into JRFC’s established female rugby pathways that provide opportunities to play with the senior women’s team.
A secondary schools programme will also be delivered by JRFC Coaches to support the delivery of technical contact rugby delivery in schools. Teaching the skills of contact rugby has been identified as an area of weakness for PE staff in Jersey’s five non-fee paying Government secondary schools. This programme therefore provides students with technical coaching delivery and staff with an upskilling opportunity for two hours per week across 12 weeks.
Finally, the funding will provide a 75% contribution of the associated costs to support the ongoing development of JRFC’s local coaches and officials. The club will provide upskilling opportunities for their volunteers coaches and referees to support the quality and sustainability of their ever-expanding community rugby offer.
The Jersey Rugby Minis and Juniors held their annual Girls Rugby Open Day on 6 October 2024 to tempt new players into their growing squad.
They welcomed over 15 new players in the secondary school ages for their U12 to U18 teams. The coaches introduced girls to a series of fun activities including, tackling, passing and skill-based obstacle courses. As well as a great turnout of the current ladies team to assist and inspire. Head coach Julia Williams said, “It was so encouraging to see so many teenage girls trying rugby with big smiles on their faces and challenging themselves with new skills.”
Girls rugby is a globally expanding sport, with England recent winners of the WXV1 tournament in Canada and also looking forward to hosting the Women’s rugby world cup in 2025 in England.
The Jersey Rugby Minis and Juniors would like to thank our sponsors SG Kleinwort Hambros and Jersey Sport for their huge support in Girls Rugby. Without them this event and others would not be possible.
