Riders do not require any previous experience riding or pedalling to attend this course. The session is aimed at non-riders who cannot yet pedal their bikes or are extremely unconfident doing so. If your child is already pedalling independently this course will not be appropriate for them to attend. Â
Description: This is a beginner’s activity for children who cannot yet pedal a bike in school years 1 and 2 who would like to learn how to ride a bike for the first time, gain confidence and understand the basics of cycling. This will include getting on and off the cycle safely, to bike handling and balancing skills. The sessions are delivered in a traffic free environment and will be delivered by qualified cycle instructors.Â
Things to bring: A roadworthy bike (please remove any stabilisers), a helmet that fits correctly and is free from cracks, water bottle, snack. Suitable clothing (loose items like skirts, baggy trousers and unzipped jackets are not suitable for cycling).Â
Weather: Please bring weather appropriate clothing to the session. We encourage gloves/warm jackets that can be zipped up for cold weather and waterproof clothing in case it rains. For sunny days please bring sun protection e.g., sunscreen and light layers as well as plenty of water. Please note due to the nature of these sessions they will be weather dependant, and should the winds/rain be very strong on the day causing a hazard coaches will decide whether the session is safe to go ahead. If the coaches judge the weather to be unsafe to ride in, parents will be informed a minimum of 2 hours before.Â
We highly encourage you to bring your own bike if you have access to one. However, Jersey Sport have a small fleet of bikes and helmets available for loan upon prior request on a first come first serve basis. Please email cycleteam@jerseysport.je with your child’s height (cm), inside leg length (cm) and the dates/course your child will be attending If you would like to arrange the loan of a bike / helmet for one of our courses. Â
Please note that whilst we are teaching in a public area, we ask parents not to film or take pictures of the children whilst they are in session. Â
As a parent or guardian we ask that you stay for the duration of this session and observe but we respectfully ask that you do not enter the teaching area during the session unless asked.

Requirements: Riders MUST be able to ride confidently, competently and consistently in a traffic free environment. This involves starting and stopping with control and steering the bike safely and accurately. This course combines the Bikeability level 1 and 2 syllabuses to allow those who have not yet undertaken the level 1 but are ready to take on the challenge of level 2 the opportunity to participate.
The Bikeability Level 2 course aims to develop riders’ skills and confidence for cycling on single-lane roads and simple junctions with mostly moderate motor traffic flows (where riders encounter vehicles with progressively greater frequency in each module), and prepares riders for cycling on more complex, often busier or faster roads and junctions. Riders must have fully demonstrated that they are confident with the Bikeability Level 1 assessment criteria before they start Bikeability Level 2 training. Please note that if riders are unable to demonstrate level 1 skills confidently in a playground scenario on this course they will not be allowed to progress onto the road in these sessions.
At Level 1 riders learn to:
- Prepare themselves for a journey
- Check the cycle is ready for a journey
- Set off- pedal- slow down and stop appropriately
- looking behind
- cycling one handed
- avoiding obstacles
- turning and controlling speed
- Riding in singles and pairs as part of a group
At level 2 riders learn to:
- Cycle safely, responsibly, identify and respond to hazards
- Start and stop on-road journeys
- Maintain suitable riding positions in the road
- Share the road with others and communicate with other road users
- Comply with signals, signs and road markings
- Manage risk whilst cycling
- Negotiate junctions (pass side roads, turn at T junctions and crossroads).
We highly encourage you to bring your own cycle if you have access to one. However, Jersey sport have a small fleet of cycles and helmets available for loan upon prior request on a first come first serve basis. Please contact cycleteam@jerseysport.je with your child’s height (cm), inside leg length (cm) and the dates/course your child will be attending If you would like to arrange the loan of a cycle / helmet for one of our courses.

All riders must be able to cycle independently. We can incorporate adaptive cycles, cargo cycles, e-cycles and cycles with child seats into the sessions.
Required equipment: a roadworthy cycle, a helmet that fits correctly & is free from cracks, water bottle and some snacks in a backpack riders can ride with. Suitable clothing (loose items like skirts, baggy trousers and unzipped jackets are not suitable for cycling).
What is Family Bikeability & how does it work?
Family Bikeability is a training course to help people cycle together and complements the Bikeability for children and adults which we already offer. It enables families, or friends with children to plan enjoyable group rides, consider switching from driving to cycling the school run and feel more confident to support their children to become capable cyclists. Whether you are relative novices to cycling or you all ride already but would like advice on specific routes your instructor will tailor the session to meet your needs. The session will be delivered by fully qualified National Standard Instructor/s who will tailor the training to meet the needs of each family.
Sessions are for up to 6 people, there needs to be at least one child (under 18) and one adult (over 18) at the session. All riders must be able to cycle & stop without wobbling before taking part. Training will begin off main roads (In Green lanes / Cycle Infrastructure where possible) and move on to larger, busier roads once your instructor feels everyone is ready. Please be aware that where groups have very different ages or abilities, instructors need to pace training to suit the least able.
The instructor/s will meet the family in a central location and the training will progress onto local roads, based around on and off-road routes that you wish to cycle together. We also cover cycling as a group and protective riding strategies.
During the session riders may learn to:
- Plan a journey – this could from home to school
- Plan to and ride assertively everywhere cycling is permitted
- Maintain suitable riding positions in the road
- Cooperate with and respect other road users (including avoiding driver blind spots and riding with others)
