Our Bikeability cycling course is for School Year 5+ and combines the Bikeability level 1 and 2 syllabus to allow those who have not yet undertaken the level 1 but are ready to take on the challenge of level 2 the opportunity to participate. Children MUST be able to ride confidently, competently, and consistently in a traffic free environment before participating. This involves starting and stopping with control and steering the bike safely and accurately.

The Bikeability Level 2 course aims to develop riders’ skills and confidence for cycling on single-lane roads and simple junctions with mostly moderate motor traffic flows (where riders encounter vehicles with progressively greater frequency in each module), and prepares riders for cycling on more complex, often busier or faster roads and junctions. Children must demonstrate that they are confident with the Bikeability Level 1 assessment criteria before they start Bikeability Level 2 training. Please note that if riders are unable to demonstrate level 1 skills confidently in a playground scenario on this course they will not be able to progress onto the road in these sessions.

At Level 1 riders learn to:

  • Prepare themselves for a journey
  • Check the cycle is ready for a journey
  • Set off- pedal- slow down and stop appropriately
  • Looking behind
  • Cycling one handed
  • Avoiding obstacles
  • Turning and controlling speed
  • Riding in singles and pairs as part of a group

At level 2 riders learn to:

  • Cycle safely, responsibly, identify and respond to hazards
  • Start and stop on-road journeys
  • Maintain suitable riding positions in the road
  • Share the road with others and communicate with other road users
  • Comply with signals, signs and road markings
  • Manage risk whilst cycling
  • Negotiate junctions (pass side roads, turn at T junctions and crossroads).

Things to bring: Your child will need a roadworthy bike, a helmet that fits correctly & free from cracks, a filled water bottle and some snacks. Suitable clothing (loose items such as skirts, baggy trousers and unzipped jackets are not suitable for cycling).

We highly encourage your child to bring their own bike if you have access to one. If your child does not have access to a bicycle, we have a very small fleet of bicycles available for loan upon prior request on a first come first serve basis. Please contact our Jersey Sport Cycling team by emailing: with your child’s height, inside leg length and the dates/course your child will be attending If you would like to arrange the loan of a bike / helmet for one of our courses.
